Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Alekh had been killed by the Israeli army mistakenly, conceded the Israeli army. The army admitted that one of the soldiers shot the Palestinian-American reporter suspecting she was a militant.
The army stated this in the final report of the investigation. The army said it’s highly possible that Israeli Defense Forces accidentally hit Abu Alekh while the firing was happening toward suspects. The army was carrying out operations against suspected Palestinian gunmen.
Abu Alekh died on May 11. Since then, the army continuously insisted that determining the cause of death was impossible. The Israeli army said that militant fire might have killed the celebrated journalist. Months after the incident, the army finally conceded that one of its soldiers had shot her.
A senior army officer has said that the IDF soldier who shot the Al Jazeera journalist might have been unable to identify her. The officer added that confirming which gunfire took her life was impossible. He expressed regret for the incident.
